I just purchased the Heli-Max MX450 XS from Tower Hobbies for $149.99 on-line without the motor or speed controller. The model came fully assembled and made of aluminum and carbon fiber. The only plastic in the kit was the landing struts, the tail blades and the flybar paddles.

It took me a total of 5 hours to install the recommended motor and speed controller, 4 HS-65HB servos, a 401 gyro and a Spektrum 6100 receiver. I needed to open the servo mounting holes a little with my dremel tool but the screw holes in the servos lined up with the holes in the frame. It took another 2 hours to cut out and decorate the plastic canopy.

I am very impressed with the looks and performance of this helicopter and I was flying it the same day I opened the box. I also have a Trex 450 SE with almost the same set-up. The Trex has metal gears in the servos and a digital tail servo but the flight performance of the 2 helicopters is almost identical until you push the 3D stuff where the digital tail servo makes a big difference. I plan to order a micro digital tail servo and see how much that helps.

I broke a landing strut and bent the tail rotor shaft during the first day of flying while I was setting up the gyro. I glued the strut back together and installed the spare tail rotor shaft that I had for my Trex. It was a perfect fit and I was back in the air. I ordered the new landing gear from Tower Hobbies and had it before the next weekend. Because of the price and quick parts shipping I strongly recommend this helicopter. I now have 7 helicopters but this purchase was by far the most helicopter for the money I’ve gotten to date.
Hits Misses
• Metal head and tail rotor
• Carbon fiber fins and tail boom
• Comes fully assembled
• Brittle landing struts
• Does not allow for available digital tail servo mounting
