I don't have an IC bird yet, so this is more an out of interest Q:
Do most people use throttle hold and have the throttle stick control just the collective? if so why?
Or, is the throttle linked(mixed) with collective. My little cp pro has both options, is that more the norm? to have both options I mean.
I fully understand(I think) why throttle hold is the prefered option, but for leccy flight, I guess the issue is flight time will be hit hard having the head spin at high speed all the time.
Also, along those lines, on a small electric, would the prefered way to spin up be to throttle up using the stick, then switch to throttle hold? that would reduce the current shock to the speed controller.

you gotta watch those quick spin ups 'cause if you look at your rotor shaft ( where ot goes into the plastic head ass. ) near the top there's a little holding pin that goes through - that's what holds the head assembly and the rotor driveshaft together and it really takes a pounding when you wind up quick and/or strike the blades -

you will end up with more play in the drive train the more of a beating this gets - down the road it will also make it harder to dis-assemble these two pieces if you have to replace anything, as the shaft inside will "burr" from the pin movement, and make it difficult to pull those two pieces apart ( been through it )

Vapochilled- I think you may have mis understood what the throttle hold function is. Throttle hold is used to hold the throttle at idle to allow for collective control during an auto rotation, with the engine idling the entire time. "idle ups" are used to change the mix that is normally ramped up from idle at low stick to full throttle at high stick (normal mode) to a mode that is has full power at low stick and high stick, the pitch will have full negative at low stick, 0' pitch at half stick, and full positive pitch at high stick for aerobatics. (idle ups 1 and 2)
the transmitter on your Blade CP pro does not have a throttle hold function, only idle up, and no you do not want to just flick that on from a dead start without spooling the heli up first.

Ahh, thanks for clearing that up, I figured it would be bad to just flip that and allow the thing to strain upto speed.
I'm guessing that it's used for 3D where you want to maintain head speed without having to have fixed pitch + or -?

I like throttle hold. :D
