In issue #2 in the engine tuning article, it states that you tune the engine at hover using the high-end needle. Any experienced heli pilot knows you only use the high-end needle to tune during climb out. The low-end needle should be used to tune at hover. Both needles have a relational mix and are not completely independant. The low-end needle effects the engine more at hover than the high-end.

Your are partially correct.

Let’s take an OS 50 for example. The way I tune the low end is by pinching the fuel tubing and counting around 7 or 8 before the engine dies. Since an OS 50 does not have an adjustable midrange needle, the mixture is a combination of low and high end needles. Once you have a stable idle and hover range set on the low end, than you tune the high end for climb outs. You tune the high end from the hover point to max pitch. A too lean of a low end will overheat and over rev your engine during quick descents in idle up 1 which is one of the major causes of the strange buzzing sound that comes from the tail under these conditions. A fat high end will cover up a lean low end and is not noticeable until flown hard. So in saying that, tuning from hover on the high needle is not entirely incorrect.

Thanks Fasrc. That is what I was trying to say when I said "relational mix" for lack of the correct phrase. You have to tune both the low and high end for hover.

In issue #3, they tell you only to adjust the high-end needle in a hover. Both needles affect the mixture at hover. I'm using the TT50 engine which you HAVE to adjust the low-end needle at hover. All engines are different but the TT50 is low-end heavy.

Yep...That TT50 is a handful.... You can do the needle mode to fix the fat at low end issue. I recommend the OS 50 hyper if you ever get a chance...you'll love it. I have flown many .50 motors and I love the OS 50 hyper.....I am interested in trying the YS 50 but it is almost impossible to find State side.
