Are these necessary all the time, or just when you run high headspeeds?

If so, any recommendations?

For glow machines, you shouldn't need a governor until you get pretty good with it (i.e. getting into 3D). Just learning, FF, and loops & rolls don't really call for a governor.
Getting one early will only teach you bad habits....like not learning to set up a good throttle curve. There's no saying when a governor could fail and fall back on the curves you set in the radio. IMO, learn throttle curves first at least, then move onto wherever you would like to go, governor or not. The throttle curves are the groundwork for almost everything you do with a heli.

I just got a governor for my gasser. Everyone I talk to who flies gassers, swears by them. I'm still in the process of tweaking it, so I can't give a good review as of yet. I DO, however have the throttle curves set so it's quite happy without it, but it still tends to overspeed and/or bog from time to time, so I'm hoping the governor will alleviate this.

I'm also an advicate for a good throttle/pitch curve setup. They're really not difficult to do. You'll also have a better understanding of what's going on.

I agree with the guys above, once you figure out the curve setup and get that down packed than get governor. I flew without one for 2 years than I decided to put one on that I had setting in a drawer. It made a world of difference and made me wonder why it took me so long to install and use it. Now, I will not fly a heli without one as it makes 3D extermely easier to handle. I prefer the TJ RevMax but any governor will do. Read my article on the RevMax it explains it all.

Right on, thanks for the input. Makes sense.

I checked out the RevMax article, pretty rad. I'll keep it in the back of my head for when I get throttle curves down.

I'm happy to say, I learned throttle/pitch curves in the beginning. It gave me a better understanding how the throttle/pitch curve relations and heli work.
I ordered a TJ RevMax that's scheduled to arrive next week. It's virtually impossible to maintain a consistent head-speed without a governor. With a governor it's a good idea to have a back-up mode in the event the governor fails.

I did, and you sold me on the RevMax. Thanx, Fasrc.

I used the RevMax for months and it worked out very well. However, if you want a governor with more options and functionality, the MultiGov (http://aerospire.com/) is an excellent product. No other governor is easier to setup and it works perfect. It also allows you to select either governor or limiter, separately for each flight mode with different head speeds. It has advanced parameters you can tweak for everything you can imagine but the default settings run great.

I'm waiting for the revmax now. I'll have to try the multigov when I purchase a new 90 in a few months. :)
