hi everyone, new this week to the forums.

3d doesn't really appeal to me, but, man, scale sure does! i'm a former body tech/painter so i'm planning on buying an unpainted fuse. i have hvlp spray equipment, so that's no problem. my question is paint specific.

would an automotive base/clear polyurethane stand up to the fuel and exhaust? the last thing i would want to have happen would be for the clear to bubble, oxidize, yellow, lift, etc. because the fuel attacked it. any suggestions?

Back in the 90s when Acrylic Laquer was popular, I used to shoot my heli canopies with it. Then I'd use clear Polyurethane over it. Worked very well. I just found that the clear coat would yellow over time.

yeah, that was a common problem back then, even on cars, assuming the c.c. didn't oxidize first! new paint chemistry has come a long way since then, and the higher end clears from dupont and house of kolor even though they are expensive, last forever. cheaper clears yellow out too and "shrink" alot which can promote cracking. on a scale bird with lots of tight corners and compound curves can exacerbate this situation.

would keeping the body waxed with colonite or something similar help? i know boat guys love to use colonite on their hulls because it stands up to the salt water really well. hmmm... sounds like a project! try a bunch of different waxes and see if fuel eats any of 'em up. but, the wax would make it look great for static displays! if anyone's interested, to make your bird shine so so bright and deep you can see the boogers in your nose, i'd recomend the meguires three step wax system. i use it on my datsun and when i'm real bored, some of my die cast collection. it works second to none. even use it on your car at home and it'll pump new life into your paint so it looks better than new! can't wait to finish my moving process so i can start playing again!

i know, i get off on tangents allot. my wife likes to point that out to me all the time...

there we go, another tangent..... i'm clocking out...
