Today i was attempting to start my OS 50 and everytime i removed the glow plug lighter the motor would drop RPM and then stall out. If i gave it throttle with the lighter on it would spoll up fine. This went on for about 15 min then i finally got the motor to run and flew without incident. Anyone have a clue what it might be? Rich? , Lean? main screw or needle? The weather today was hot 85 very humid

I had problems like this my first year of flying because i didn't tune the engine right (and didn't know how). I didn't fight with it as long as you did, I just changed out the glow plug and scratched my head about it until I discovered how much happier my heli was when it was getting enough lubrication! :o It would run fine with the igniter on and quit as soon as I took it off.

This usually happened after an engine-out in flight, though so it will PROBABLY not be the same problem you're experiencing. In humid weather don't be surprised if you have to richen it up a couple clicks for it to still be happy. Check the temp on the backplate after each flight to make sure it's rich enough. It WILL run hotter in hotter weather so the 5 second rule could shrink to about 3-1/2 to 4 seconds in the heat.

As long as you followed the directions in the "How To" section of RC Heli Magazine (TM) :D you should be fine. Maybe in the hot weather, you may want to re-check it though.

You should have a noticeable smoke trail and the engine should sound smooth but a bit on the rich side. A good test to see if you're running to lean, take your heli into a hover, even fly a few circuits then come back and hover for a minute... Land the heli and drop your throttle to idle position, if your engine races and screams when it should be idling, it's running to lean. Adjust needle on the high end two or three clicks at a time, if the problem persists, try a couple more clicks. Your transition between idle to half open throttle should be smooth without any hesitation. If it continues to run lean, check your fuel lines, a leaky fuel line will lean out your engine.

Good luck!

well im almost sure its because i dont have it set right. As for the 5 second rule i was able to go alittle longer then 5 secs so that could be the problem i will reset the mixture on the next flight out and use the tips in teh tips section to set it and see if that solves my problem
