After deciding on a Mini Titan, I visited a couple of my local hobby shops to see if they carried that model (+ parts). Although they did not, the last place I visited had a computer there with the Real Flight simulator (version 3.5) running, and what looked like a "toy" reciever. So I tried it...... it really was like the real thing! At first I tried to fly a Raptor 90 3D helicopter - forget it. I couldn't even hover the thing. (recall I used to own and fly a .45 nitro model, but it was over 25 years ago). So the salesman selected a larger, scale (read: slow) model, and I was actually able to hover and fly it! It was so cool. I can't imagine how much time and money I could have saved had I had this when I first learned to fly. I have to get this before I get another model.

While we're on the subject, is there any compelling reason I should buy the latest version, version 4? Is it really that much more reponsive (or whatever) than the 3.5 version? Or does it just give you better flying backgrounds.

Also, I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 (2Ghz processor, 3D 64Meg graphics card). That should work, shouldn't it?
Thanks!

Depends on your computer. G4 looks to be a resource hog, so if you do not have a computer that has dual core processors, huge video card, and 2 gigs of memory, then you will have to upgrade or get a new computer. I run G3.5 and find it to be good enough, and it runs on my 3 year old pentium 4 pc. I do have to run Photofield because my video card is not burly enough, but that is fine with me, I like the photofields anyway. Plus, 3.5 is a bit less expensive. For me, the sim is a tool, if that tool is doing what it is supposed to, then who cares if it is shiny and new?

PHOENIX!

You ever notice that the majority of guys using Phoenix USED to fly with G3/ G3.5?
Maybe cuz we KNOW that Phoenix is 10 times the better simulator than G3.5.

Lets not forget. Phoenix costs WAY LESS, and the updates are free.
Yes, free.

Tell 'em, BBoy.

I ended up buying the version 4 (G4). Man am I addicted to this thing!
FWIW, my Mobility Radeon 9000 video card works as far as flying realism, but the background isn't as sharp as it could be. The latest video card I can buy for this antiquated laptop is the GeForce 440, and Great Planes tells me that it would be no better. That's okay. I don't care if the background isn't super sharp - my flying skills are improving at a phenomenal rate!

Tell 'em, BBoy. Yes it is true DJB but I don't think they get it most people rather spend alot of money for there sim and then spend alot more on updates oow heres 5 more planes and a heli for only $29.99 more and did you know that none of the 3.5 updates work with G4 what a company they really know how to take care of there customers they hold there hand all the way to the bank.

Real Flight G3/G3.5 Expansion Packs 1-4 ARE compatible with G4.

The older "add-on" packs are currently not compatible, but they are working on it.

Oh, and there are tons of user created aircraft and flying sites for free.
Yes, free.

How does it cost "WAY LESS"?

On the site it is $164.95, plus $10.32 shipping, plus $10-20 more for a TX cable if you don't have a JR transmitter. Plus you NEED your own TX (not very friendly for those not already in the hobby yet).

RealFlight G4 is $199.95, comes with it's own "TX", comes with TX adapter cables for Futaba and JR, and has free shipping from ReadyHeli.

It only ends up being $5-$25 cheaper. At least until you add the cost of a TX for a new hobbyist just wanting a simulator.

Are you talking about getting Phoenix from ReadyHeli? I can't find it there. The only places I've found it online are Tower Hobbies and the Phoenix site itself.

In the end, I just wanted to make sure RealFlight is represented fairly, since it was getting 'bashed' a bit ;).

I can't attest to which sim has better flying characteristics, since I've only flown G3.5 extensively. I've tried others, but not for long enough to judge fairly.

I can say that G3.5 has helped me fly better, I like the idea of a 'spare' TX for my sim, and there is a huge user 'modding' community surrounding it.

It would be nice if Phoenix had a 'playable' demo, so I could see why you guys think it's better. All they seem to have are recordings...
