Hi everyone,

I am just curious on the advantages and disavantages of BOTH Nitro and Electric heli classes.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts =D

What great timing you have. Take a look in Issue#6 and there is a lengthy article on that very thing.

Here's my .02 cents worth. Whenever people talk about one brand over another or one type of heli (nitro or electric) over another your always gonna have some bias. Both type of heli has thier pros and cons. Flight time goes to nitro, Clean running goes to electrics, Power to cost ratio goes to nitro, lack of noise is electric. So when deciding on which one the choice is clear. GET BOTH! Thats what my plan is. I have a 30 Raptor Im putting together.in my garage, I fly around my yard with a Blade CP. And my next heli will probably be a Trex XL or SE. This way I can have the best of both worlds.Thats my story and Im sticking with it. :o

GET BOTH! :o
I think that's what a lot of people are doing. I wanted a larger nitro bird but I also needed an electric to fly at home.

Power to cost ratio goes to nitro
I have to disagree on that one. I've done quite a bit of comparison between the two, and if you calculate long term, the electrics beat out the nitros being of the same size.

T-Rex 450xl for park time boogie.
Raptor 50 Titan(ium) for the weekends (once I finish building it).

Love sweet love.

I just stated the cost to power ratio based on the newer large electrics coming out like the TREX 600. I am not 100% sure but I hear that the battery needed to run that thing will be costly. Again I'm not 100% sure on the cost, just what I heard from the rumor mill.

a 6s pack for the Trex 600 will be about $200+

There are a few variables to consider. I was calculating long term (say 200 flights).
So if a lipo gives you 200 cycles before tapering off and let's say batteries are $300, that's $300 for 200 flights.

On a 50 size nitro, you get about 6 tanks per gallon. For 200 flights, that's about 33 gallons at $22 per gallon which brings you to $726 for 200 flights. Not to mention glow plugs, clunk lines, and cleaning supplies.

So, long term you can see it is a little cheaper going with electric. The difference is on electric you have to buy all your "fuel" up front and on nitro, you buy a gallon at a time.
