As crazy and impressive it may be. That can't be good for the heli.
I love the sound of the heli during crack roll shakey sticks or whatever you want to call it.
You're right I bet he wears out servos pretty fast.

I have seen this a couple times. I DONT get it.. It looks STUPID..I saw Szabo do it in Vegas at a airplane event and at first I thought WTF, then when I figured out he was doing it on purpose I was like WHY????

I'm with you on this one G, those 'shakey sticks' do nothing for me. Alan Szabo is an extreamly talented pilot and I enjoy watching his repertoire - but the crack stuff just don't look right and for whatever reason just doesn't impress me.

First time I saw that crap I thought the guy threw a damper. I looks like something broke.

A bunch of old skoolers up there.
I defend the crack rolls for reason being.
Look at Szabo's skills... What else is he gonna do, might as well shake it up.
Also, another pilot, D Jetschin does it very well.
You guys tell me what manuevers those two are not capable of ?
When you're that skilled, gotta do something to mix it up.
I've heard it referred to as the "Crack Roll", but I don't know if that name has caught on (I hope not... it's not a very good name if you ask me).
There's nothing to doing it. You just have to have very fast, very powerful servos and then just shake the sticks back and forth like you're a junkie looking for a fix.
I'm still trying to figure out why some think it's impressive.
There's nothing to doing it. Maybe in your dreams. :)

I figured you'd weigh in again at some point.
I hate to break it to you, Brian, but I don't think you've experienced what it means to have control over a helicopter. Having fast servos and shaking your sticks back and forth violently isn't skill, it's a gimmick. There's a big difference.
Anyone can take 8717 servos on a CCPM helicopter, shake the sticks like a paint mixer, and get the same effect. They'll proably not even crash, because at that point, you're making movements so fast that if you have any measurable altitude, it's nearly impossible to hit the ground. I can stir sticks and not hit the ground, but it doesn't mean that I've done anything with skill. It just means that I've not hit the ground doing it.
If you want to see skilled piloting, then you need to watch some of the F3C class videos from the 2006 Nats on RunRyder. Men like Wayne Mann, Scott Gray, Curtis Youngblood, Cliff Hiatt, and Dwight Shilling are some of the best true pilots that you'll ever see. In fact, three of those men are former World Champions, and one of them is a 3-time World Champion. If you're tempted to think that it looks easy, then I'll issue you a challenge:
Go to the AMA website and download the contest directions for AMA Class 1-3 and F3C. Set up a contest field according to the AMA layout. Take any one of those F3C videos that I mentioned above, and try to fly the same schedule. Make sure to videotape it and put it on YouTube so we can see it. Then, come back and tell us what you think about F3C aerobatics, and how hard it is in relation to a gimmick like the "Crack Roll".

I've heard and have seen vids of all the above mentioned. I flew Scott Gray's Vibe 90 this year, on a buddybox. :D I understand what you're saying about control over a helicopter. I do practice all types of flying. I disagree about just shaking the sticks and not crashing. The two pilots I mentioned are doing it low and during manuevers, and not easy moves by any means.
I hate to break it to you, Brian, but I don't think you've experienced what it means to have control over a helicopter.
What planet are you living on
I fly my heli, and personally, I think I do a great job only two years into it. I control my helicopter the way I want. Not crashing and continuously flying gallon after gallon after gallon, if that's not control, then what is?. . I've done F3C style hover practice. That's not me, I thrashed on a sk8brd for twenty years, you think I want to sit and hover{I do respect all pilots that do that sort of thing}
3D is what I wanted from the beginning, so that's my intentions. To learn every attitude possible and still fly the machine in control.

I don't do the crack ;) I just fly. On a plane the crack would probably look like shakey-plank.

You mean Justin :) Must be nice to have those toys at that age. Most kids are playing with Tonka trucks at that age. I watched him fly up in kcgraves land. Here's a pic of the super-grommet. :D

You know, I've been thinking about this, here's what I've come up with.....Alan, aside from being a great pilot is also a showman. The crack moves on the sticks may seem useless to some, but from what I've heard from Cuzz is that it produces a fluttering sound - which in turn adds to the show. Also, I serious don't think he really cares about wear and tear on his equipment. Just my $.02.......

The "crack thing" doesn't impress me either, even as a novice. No matter what type of flying you persue, the only person you have to make happy is you. Now the little kid makes an impression.:D

Vermonster, watching little Justin fly was absolutely insane. At this particualr event, I'd have to say out of {guessing} 50 to 75 pilots he was probably the 5th most skilled pilot there, also, all the different models he has to fly is another story. Thanks dad :D
