When I fly on the sim I tend to fly lower than when I fly my real heli.
There is a trade off of safe height versus lower being more visible.
Is there a point while learning to fly that you start flying lower and realize that forward flight is actually safer at a lower altitude?
And what would you recommend as a safe altitude for forward flight practice?

Forward flight practice should be done at least 2 mistakes high. Usually 20-30 feet in the air so that if you make a mistake, you can screw up the recovery twice before you crash. :p
I still practice almost anything new at least 20 feet up still. I can and do ground maneuvers like dragging the skids around, FF and figure 8's close to the ground now, but I've got all of that mastered.
It comes down to how comfortable YOU feel in your piloting skills to bring it down to the deck once you're ready.

Thanks for the information.
Two mistakes high sounds like a good place for me. :)
Its almost too hot to fly, 107 degrees today. My hands sweat on the Tx.

Wisconsin hasn't been much better. High 90's to 100 and HUMID!!! Looks like we may get a break from that soon, though. No rain for weeks, either. Grass is all dead.
