View Full Version : Major headspeed increase with Jazz

Wow,

I just put a Jazz 40 on my Rex to kill the motor cutout issue, and now it lays broken.

the built in governor mode in this Jazz esc is kind of WOT isn't it? I as of yet don't have a tach, but I could instantly tell there was a major headspeed increase on spooling up. This caused my once semi-calm bird to get touchy as heck. Something I was capible of keeping in a 4x4 foot area zoomed into the wall and shattered the blades and broke a washout lever(more may follow upon the autopsy)

Is there any way to drop the headspeed any short of cramming a smaller pinion on the motor? The manual is in some weird fake english that is hard to decipher ;) Resorting to changing the pinion to alter the headspeed seems kind of crude when you are dealing with a high tech electronic speed control... I kinda was feeling good with the headspeed from the stock align 25amp esc... and I had to throw a monkey wrench in trying to fix the motor cutouts... *sigh*

Chris

P.S. not to mention I am running out of stuff to put in front.. only have the esc gyro and tail servo behind the main shaft, and I have to precariously balance my battery forward on 2/3 of the battery tray to balance it... dang heavy equipment 401/jazz/94761

The very first thing you need to do when programming the Jazz for the first time is do the throttle calibration. Next, you can get any RPM you want by setting the throttle curves. Where do you have your throttle curve set?

From what I have read on other boards is the governor on the Jazz basically ignores a throttle curve as at any throttle above 50% it goes into a fixed RPM that it attempts to maintain.

For being one of the best speed controls this thing seems to be mired in a fog of misinformation and guesswork

Not to mention I actually got the jazz off the ground twice, once the curve was still set at what it was for my 25amp, the second I pulled the throttle curve down to 65% max and it still spooled up just the same.

I read on another forum linked from trex tuning that there is another step at something like 45%, but wouldn't you know.. pieces are already hanging off my bird so I can test untill I replace those :(

???? I'm not sure what message boards our getting your information from but that is completely wrong. The governor RPM is controlled by the throttle settings you set in the throttle curve. If it doesn't work this way, you have a bad ESC.

Also, if you don't calibrate the throttle during programming, your throttle setting will be off quite a bit. This may be the reason your experiencing problems.

I have heard that the Jazz can produce higher head speeds than other speed controls on the market. if you had you throttle curves set for a normal curve, and you tried to fly it in governor mode, it would be way out of whack. was the speed control set to gov mode? I have not actually owned a Jazz myself, so I cannot offer specific setup help, but usually running in gov mode requires you have a flat curve with constant values, like 80% across the board. You would have your normal curve set to spool up, and then flip into idle up to hold a given RPM.

When using the Jazz, it's almost a must to use gov mode. You program mode 4 (heli), mode 9 (lipo), calibrate the throttle stick and your done.

Just to clarify, when I metion throttle curves I'm actually referring to the throttle point settings and not an actual curve. Aaron is correct that the the idle-up modes should be a flat level and normal mode can be set for spin up. I currently have normal set to 0-35-50-50-50 and idle-up set to 78-78-78-78-78. These will be much different for every single model and will also depend on the throttle calibration.

Well once I pick up a new mixer lever I plan to do some fine tuning of the curves to try to bring the headspeed back down.

I will try that 50 50 50 set up as well as clearing back to mode one and redoing the setup.

Now time to wait for the postman to bring some rex parts to me :(

Well I reset the jazz, set up lipo mode, and set it with a fully charged pack. Much nicer, now to wrangle in the tail with the new digital servo.
