How about an article on the fairly new Spectrum DX6 radio's. My LHS talked me into this radio for my MX-400 and I'm not sure I'm liking it. Any thoughts???

I have one, while the technology is great, the menus, menu access and programming is horrifying!
I am seriously considering buying a JR6102 and hacking it just to get something with usable programming.
Instead of just one radio in the review... How about a radio shootout which then seperates radios into classes budget, mid range, and cream of the crop radios? I just bought myself a optic 6 without the synthisized module (as that seemed to be where the problems were) and am liking it. I would have liked to have read a formal review before I bought it though...
Or how about, when you do a heli review you do a sidebar review of the radio if one has not been done for that model of radio in the past? Touching base on programming, setup, features, problems you have had, included items, etc.
Just reviewing the helis are nice but they have a mountain of support equipment they require... help us beginners not require a straight jacket in deciding ;)

That's basically what Jeff Green did in the latest issue. Did you read it? It's not detailed about any specific radios, but it does half of what you suggested.

He just showed how radios work. He didn't say one was necessarily better than another. I'd love to have a "Radio Shootout" just to know what to buy when I'm ready to move up from my BCX.
Yes I read it, however it still left me with trying to dig out the pros and cons of the radios before I bought one. I am however happy about the one I finally selected, this Optic 6 is actually very easy to set up even without the "visual clues" and the seperate throttle and collective hover adjustment trims/triggers seem cool so far, now I just need to get a bit more power out of this bird to get more then 8 inches off the ground  down with el-cheepo aaa battery packs

A REAL "shootout" would be great, but as a new magazine (a little controversy here) are they ready to throw some dirt on a possible advertiser????

Every radio has their great models and their "eh..." model. Shootout is just putting a benchline test out there.
Advertising screws up Car and Drivers tests anyways.

The spektrum radio is the best thing since sliced bread. I installed the spektrum in my Caliber 30 glo-heli with no glitches during it's use. My club went back to an ama charter, so I had to re-install my Futaba 9chp 72mhz. I've had glitches almost every tank-full on the 72mhz. Another plus with the spektrum is, "You can't be shot-down by another radio."
I only had one issue with the spektrum over my 9chp. It seems as there's a delay with the spektrum sticks, it's not as crisp as the 9chp. I don't use expo's or dual rates on my heli, everything has maximum throw without any binding.
All in all, the spektrum shines in everyway. :D
Soon they'll have a module for my 9chp, it's only a matter of time when 72mhz will become obsolete.

What was the best thing before they invented sliced bread¿?¿
What did they go back to before they invented the drawing board¿?¿

LoL
I guess you're not a fan of the spektrum system.

The Spektrum is outstanding technology, I wish the programming was more capable and easier to use. It works great for my park fliers, I can't wait for them to get a module for the 9CHP.
Maybe it's just me, but I don't see what's so good about sliced bread. Is that the crowning achievement of human civilization? Personally I think the wheel and computer rate higher than sliced bread.

No, I didn't mean it that way at all. It was just my off-handed attempt at humor. Lots of lost planes and heli's could have been saved over the years with this technology. We just had a $2500 plane shot down because someone didn't have a frequency pin at our field. They even refused to take the blame and conveniently switched the frequency on their Optic 6 (a radio which I am NOT a fan of) to cover up their error. Funny their plane's crystal was the same.....hmmmmm

the spektrun radio is a great system, but it is limited for helicopters because it only offers a 3 point pitch and throttle curve. I am very much looking forward to more sophisticated spektrum systems that offer more versitility for the heli pilot.

Not only the heli features, but just using it on multiple models, the system menu is a painful to access and changing models is even more painful.

As I said in a previous post, I had no glitching issues on a nitro 30 size heli and range was not an issue either. Yeah the three point curves make it limited, but -10/0/+10 on the pitch curve and 100/55/100 on the throttle curve in idle 3 mode works fine with my heli for aerobatics. The best thing is, supposedly you can not be shot down by another radio or have any outside interference interrupt the signal.
I'm on my 9chp now for my Cal 30 and the spektrum is going into my Trex today. :D

Ok, I have had it with the Spektrum DX-6 programming, the heli-mode is useless. I just found out while setting up "stunt" mode for my T-Rex, the "stunt" mode throttle curve only has two points with the third point being fixed at the normal throttle curve high value.
That makes governer mode unusable. Unbelieveable... apparently they have never flown a micro heli.
IMHO, the Spektrum DX-6 is only useful for simple airplane park flyers!
I plan on converting back to my 9CHP and I will think twice before purchasing another Spektrum radio.
Anyone want to buy a slightly used Spektrum DX-6?

First off, let me say I have NO proof of this... but rumor has it that the next line of JR radio's is supposed to be based on the spektrum technology and that they are working on dialing it in to have a longer range and work out small issues that are currently in the market.
It's my understanding that the spektrum is not made for heli's, and is for park flyers only.

the spektrum will work for park flyer helis like the T-REX 450 or similar, but it just has limited setup options. I think you are probably correct that we will see a line of more sophisticated radios coming out in the (hopefully) not too distant future with spread spektrum.
