Hey guys, in safety RC heli forums i have never really seen anyone say this idea... seriously guys "don't laugh" ,what do you think of wearing racing car helmet, motocross body armour & ice hockey neck throat gaurd when you are flying your heli???

I just think if you are flying a 50 to 90 size 3D heli, imagine if it went out of control really fast and hit you,you would be in hospital or you could even get killed.
But if you were wearing all of this saftey protection you would probably not even get hurt.
What are your thoughts guys???

Seems like not many people look at the safety section of the forum but what do you think of my idea guys?

Obsurd! Thats all I have to say about that.
I guess do it if you wish, if you feel safer that way, But I dont want to be seen anywhere near you! :D
Or maybe, are you suggesting that the spectators where this stuff when you are on the sticks?

Have you ever heard of a "Foo Shield"?

No what is a Foo Shield?
Why is it so Obsurd? If you got hit in the head neck or body with a 90 size 3D heli and the carbon fibre main blade hit you in the head neck or body at high rpm i bet you would not think it to be Obsurd you could be seriously injured or killed if this happened to you. But if you had the protection gear on that i listed you would not get hurt!

Please post a pic or explain in detail to me what a Foo Shield is?
I am a newbie to RC heli's
Does a Foo Shield do the same job as the protective gear that i listed?
If you were hit by a heli with the main rotor at full rpm, you'd wish you were wearing motocross gear, but the chances of being hit are pretty small. So, although secretly I want to wear gear like that, I just cave in to social pressure and just wear street clothes.
Seriously, you want to be comfortable while you're out flying, don't you? Most of the time I fly alone, so I'm not so worried. What does scare me is a newbie flying beyond his ability. My 3 year old is asking to come with when I go flying, but I rarely take him. When I do, it is because I'm flying at a location where I can stand right next to the car and he can stay inside the car and play or watch a DVD. I'm not willing to take even a small risk with him.
In the next couple of years I probably will start taking him with though, so here is an idea that I have had. What if I carried a large towel, kind of how chefs will tuck a corner of a towel in the waistband of their pants so it's always accessible. If a heli was coming at us, of course the first choice is to get to safe place, but as a last resort, I could pull out the towel and try and toss it into the rotor before it "got" us.
It sounds kind of hokey, but I'm thinking in the worst case I miss with the towel, I'm still no worse off than I would have been if I didn't have the towel. (As long as I don't put myself at risk so that I can use the towel).
What do you guys think? Is it worth carrying a towel "just in case"? Or, totally stupid idea?

When i started this thread i thought some people might think my idea was silly and standing in a field flying a RC heli wearing that full motorcross gear and throat gaurd you might even look like a dickkhead.
But if it meant getting sliced up by a 90 sized 3D heli Main blade at high RPM or looking like a bit of a dickkhead well i know what i would choose. lol

Jeff that towel idea in theory sounds ok but you would have to have quick reactions to throw it in the main blade and if you missed you could be screwed and also the main blades might just flick the towel away but i don't know just my opinion!

I wouldn't wear that even if I were driving formula one race cars. :p
Seriously, you can do without the gear. It'll make you uncomfortable.
The helmet....
.... I won't even go there. Flying helicopter requires good vision, and anything on my head other than a RCHELI magazine baseball hat, is unacceptable.
Don't fly so close to yourself, and if you have the issue of the heli attacking you, jump/dive out of the way quickly.

I agree with cuzz. You need to be comfortable and not have anything obstructing your vision or movement. I think that gear would probably be creating more of a hazard than preventing one. I understand the need to protect yourself but, I don't think that is the answer. Like cuzz said, "don't fly so close to yourself" and be ready to get out of the way if something were to happen.
No idea is "dumb", well, maybe some are :p , it's just not practical for this hobby imo.

Cheers guys i kinda thought it would be a bit silly to wear that gear but i also thought it really would save you if a heli hit you!
Cheers guys! :)

I realize this is in fun, but If your heli hitting you is an issue you need to get back to basics. I am still learning and work really hard on the basics so I wont hurt myself or anybody else. Besides what the heck are you doing flying so close to your self or anyone else? I will skip the safety gear and burn another ten gallons in hover mode to make it perfectly safe..
All I can say is if it's coming right for you RUN, don't stand there like a deer in the headlights. Always watch out for the ghost in the machine

No what is a Foo Shield?
A few years back, (before my time) there was this punk kid on RunRyder, with the screen name "Foo"
He was known for posting numerous pics of himself smoking weed and stuff on RR. He never had anything positive to contribute to the site.
Needless to say, he wasnt well likes on RR, and was often ridiculed.
He owned a Raptor 30, that he flew in his back yard. He was scared to death of that machine.
What he did was, he set up a large piece of plexiglass that he set up between him and the heli.
This is what is known as the "Foo Shield"
If you are on RunRyder a lot, you might see the reference pop up every once in a while.
Although I cant really blame the guy for wanting to play it safe, I think it's hysterical.

Thats nothing new. I have visted a number of clubs, that in their safety guidlines and bylaws, they require heli pilots to actually carry a towel or a blanket with them.
There might even be a blurb in the AMA guidelines. I'd have to read them over again, just to be sure.
Its only practical purpose it to stop a heli doing the "chicken dance"
As for trying to knock a heli out of the sky, I'd say if you had the time to throw a towel at it, then you have more than enough time to just get the hell out of the way. :)
I think a towel being thrown at a rotor disc spinning at 2000 rpm's, would be more likely to just BOUNCE OFF, than stop the blades.
Although I have never actually SEEN someone with a towel at the flight line, most guys will tell you that they will just use the shirt off of their back.
First of all you should'nt be that scared of getting hit by a heli you're flying, right. Just get the basics down first, either on a sim or just hovering lots and you really shouldn't have much to worry about. ;)
what about this its a super foo shield all you need is ac and heat and your set LOL:rolleyes:
