The cone on my tail rotor gear box housing that holds the veritcal tail support broke out so I need to replace the gear box housing. What's the best way to remove it from the tail boom without damaging the tail boom?

Thanks for any help

The best way is to just cut the boom right at the tail rotor hub. You will never get it off of the boom with out narling something up. If your replacing the tail hub anyway, just cut it off of the boom if you don't like shortening the boom.

The boom is CA'ed into the frame and tail hub so it is very difficult to remove. You can also try CA debonder but I have never heard of anyone that had success with it on this particular task.

i have just had to replace my housing from a crash and this little trick worked great for me..without shortening the tail boom i might add.

i took a full sized pair of side cutters, like the ones for wire and such, i then VERY CAREFULLY cut the housing off the tail boom lenght wise, be very slow and methodical here and you should have no trouble, it took me two cuts, one on the bottom and one on the top, just rest the tip of the cutter on the boom ahead of housing and then other tip behind the housing, so you end up with a slim section of housing running lengthwise between the cutters, then...clip...... after you have done the top and bottom you can pull the two halves off by hand...then i just took a bit of emery cloth and rubbed of the old CA, reaplied some now that i know i can take it off..lol and replaced the housing.. make sure it is straight and centered vertically otherwsise your tail rotor can affect you attitude in flight.

have done this twice so far with no trouble.

good luck ;)

Thanks guys.
The reply I got back from Eflite said I had to get the frame kit and replace the whole thing. I'm making a tail support from a small hose clamp to see how that works, I can adjust the battery forward a little if needed for balance. Both tips sound good, thanks again.
