I'm new to the hobby and I recently picked up my girst issue of R/C heli magazine and I was wondering what some of the terms such as "funnel" "nose-in" and "auto rotate" mean. Please no noob comments at least I asked and didn't assume I knew what these things mean. Are there any other words I should know? I only own a Helimax Axe EZ heli but I'm pretty good at it and I've only been flying since late december. I ask about these 3D manuevers because after I'm really goo dI'd like to learn how to fly 3D. Thanks for your help.

Here are a few terms worth knowing. You pick things up as you go also.

To answer your specific ones:

1. Funnel - I don't know.
2. Nose in is flying with the heli's nose pointed toward you as opposed to tail-in which is the nose facing away from you. This is where you start, tail-in hover. With nose-in the controls are backwards on your transmitter. Left is right, right is left and forward stick the heli is coming toward you not away.
3. Auto rotation - see the link above for a good explaination.

welcome aboard and ask all the noob questions you want everyone here is very friendly and helpful.

Ok thanks, after some quick reading I learned a lot about what my heli has and doesn't have. Does anyone know of any upgrades for the Helimax Axe EZ? I'm currently in contact with the local hobby shop trying to find servos that will fit and be faster because one of my servos is failing.

1. Funnel - I don't know.

IMO, a funnel can be done in a few different attitudes.

While flying the heli in a full 360 degree radius{circle} with the boom pointing almost straight up or down.

1. Nose down blades in.
2. Nose down blades out.
3. Boom down blades in.
4. Boom down blades out

Blade in and out are the main rotor blades. I can do the #1 with no probs.
My favorite looking funnel is #4, it looks incredible how the heli can fly in such an attitude.
Here's a quick video of my first try at the funnel #1 with my C-5.
It can be tightened up so the nose is stationary at a pivot point.

A funnel is when you tilt the heli either tail-down or tail-up and bank the heli around, keeping the tail either up or down through a whole circle repeatedly. If you fast-forward to 1:23 in THIS VIDEO (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eiAdGhfK7jY), you will see an inverted funnel. It's not perfect, but it's a good example. They vary in size and speed. Also a little shameless plug for my video editing! ;)
The HeliMax EZ isn't a 3D heli. You'll have to look into buying a different heli for your 3D endeavors. If you're looking at an electric, I'd recommend a T-Rex or Mini-Titan. You'll be in for quite a bit more work flying one of these from a HeliMax EZ. They are quite a bit harder to hover than a coaxial heli like the EZ.
Good luck.

Thanks for the funnel info. Now that I know what it is I actually saw Curtis Youngblood do it last summer when he was at the local club. Very large funnel with tail down, blades out. All I thought at the time was that if I did that, there would be blood.

I plan on buying a T-REX or a venom 3D XL for my next heli and so I can fly 3D. As for the Helimax I swapped in a set of Hitec servos and it hovers on its own and reacts much faster. Now i'd like to find a futaba radio that I could use in this heli and my next. I'd also like to find brushless motors and other parts for my Helimax anyone know where to find them?

I believe the chaos is the most difficult heli manuever.
