View Full Version : Crash & Burn

I just wanted to start this thread to share stories of my crashes. Today was one of them. The Sun was shining, the wind was down and the parking lot was half empty. I took my Blade CP out for another round of hover training. It was all smooth sailing until a gust of wind came out of nowhere. It brought my nose up but I was able to keep her stable with just a little decrease of throttle and some down pitch. This made me confident, so as you can guess, this rookie started to get a big head. Instead of bringing her down I figure I could handle the wind and continued to fly. Well Mother Nature threw me a curve ball in the form of an even stronger gust of wind out of nowhere. My little CP looked like it just got sucked up by a hurricane and went sailing towards some parked cars. I started to freak out and try to bring her down but cut too much throttle. She hit the pavement with a “SMACK” and my heart just sank. All said and done its $45 dollars worth of damage in the form of a bent shaft, busted blades, broken spindle, crooked flybar, bearings and retaining pin.
On the bright side, it gives me a chance to see and understand the inner workings of my CP. The only thing left is to justify the repair cost with the Wife!!!! LOL

If you have to justify $45, never get a bigger heli. I had a hard auto landing last week on my R50 - $130 and a mild meeting with a wall on my Trex today - $238.

All I can say buddy is welcome to flight training. :D
If you aint crashing then your not trying.

Holy Crap!! A mild meeting with a wall and a TRex cost you $238!! I put it in the dirt from over 100' straight down and it cost me about $45.. What all broke?

Well, I was stupid enough to put my 401 on top of the boom. That's the major portion of the cost. Also killed my tail servo and aileron servo plus blade grips and main gear. And the standard crash parts as well.
Just a note: DO NOT mount your gyro on top of the boom!!!!!
Mine is there now but your the second person in the last week who has destroyed a boom mounted servo. I am relocating mine!!

Where would be the best place to mount them?

I made a very simple and cheap (free) tray to mount my gyro. I will post pictures this week as soon as I rebuild the thing.
I have one I made from CF when I made my battery extension from the front. I have been flying rather than working on it. I am going to work on it asap.

As far as the $$ goes at least you didnt hit any cars.
haa that would suck..
I made a gyro mount from another piece of scrap carbon. Basically its just like a battery extension except it goes to the rear. So far so good. I basically had to relocate and rewire everything. I'll see about posting some pics of my setup.

Works pretty well and it's so easy to make. I'm waiting for a guy to send me some of his scrap pieces of CF then I'll make some nice ones.
Yep thats how mine is done. I also mounted my esc sideways. The battery connector hangs out the left side whie the motor wires hang out the right. I have it directly under the fan blades, not in the center of the gear. Then I remounted the Rx in the front. I like this setup much better so far. I was going to try and mount the gyro directly under the main shaft but I wanted more room betwen the gyro and the esc.
