I've been getting calls from a few different newbie heli-pilots in my area. The members from my club and the local hobbyshop say, I'm the heli-guy they should talk to. I'm still learning and have a long way to go with my flying. Setting up a heli is the easy part. Yesterday, I met up with a newbie that needs help. I went to his home and set up his Trex450se. He has a JR radio and even though I'm all FUTABA, I had no problems with the set-up menu. It just took me a little longer than if it were a nice Futaba TX. We set up the eccpm and pitch guaged the blades. Everything seems to be operating correctly. There was a binding sound in the head-set that seems to be from an overtightened screw. I told him to double check everything. Wednesday we will install the gy401 and get that working properly. I'm calling a friend to borrow a JR radio so we can put this newbie on a buddycord to avoid discouragement and speed up progression.
This is my last freebie set-up, time is money and money is time.
It makes me feel great to help out other people to learn this everloving and addicting sport/hobby. :D

Cuzz,
You should recommend the Ray's Authoritative DVD Series. They do answer many of the questions the new guys have. Personally, I think they're great (if you can stay awake through Ray's not very animated commentary  ). Sorry Ray ...
He's got two sets. First set is on setup and flying. Second set is on flight theory, engine break-in, and building.
With this primer, they'll show up with the heli mostly setup and you'll just have to go over it. It will save alot of your time. I lend my sets out when someone asks me for setup advice.

there is no reason to feel guilty for asking to be reimbursed to make a special effort to help someone. I mean if someone at the field has a question or wants some help I'm not going to try to charge them, but if they want me to go to thier home and spend hours setting up their heli, it is only fair to be paid for it. I faced a similar situation a while ago when I worked at hobby shop and I had become the heli guy at the store. If a customer just needed some tips, or help to overcome a particular problem or a test flight after everything was done, I would never charge them. But if they came to me with a new model and expected me to do everything, I charged them by the hour. It helps to point out what they need to do and tell them to try on thier own, if they want to learn and only need final set up help or tips along the way, I would not charge, but, if they expect you to sit down and do it for them its a whole other thing and you should be paid.

I have to agree with cb. Ray's DVDs are very informative. I have Volumes 1-5 and I really learned a lot from them.
Check them out here:

I've even emailed Ray directly with questions and he was very willing to help out. Some of my questions ended up on his FAQ page:

Nobody needs me, they just want me. ;)
BTW, get a reflex, I can't stress enough how much better it is than any realflite.
What's next.... G4.0 :p They need to keep upgrading to keep up. The only problem is, they'll never catch the xtr.
XTR reflex there is no need for an upgrade.
