What's with all the spam lately? I thought the new upgrade was going to eliminate most of it. I counted 6 this morning(correction 7),(correction 8) mostly porn. Can/is anything being done to rid this forum of this garbage? It's really getting annoying. It's hard to ignore it,so I leave them my little comments every once in awhile  . My wife is starting to look over my shoulder wondering if I'm really checking the forum or checking the PORN! :o

Good morning, helifino. I just cleaned up the forum{7 spam threads}. It seems every time I log in there are a few spam threads to be deleted. Definitely need to set up an acct. activation with valid e-maill addy to rid this problem.

Good morning and Happy New Year (well it is here)
I've been in discussion with Mike & Aaron about becoming a moderator, I thought it may have been handy, with regards to time zones, I think it was vapo- that said there is about 14 hours difference and this could be a way to have more control over the forum I could swat the bots while you are sleeping and visa versa!! Just an idea!! :)
Cheers Ralph

I also asked about this: http://www.rchelimag.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1411 and got no response, I understand it's the holiday season, but this spam issue has been going on since I can remember? It's not a hard fix
Can anyone shed any light on why this is not being looked at? I'm it's driving potential members away as it gives an air of un profesionalism..ism.ism
Come on guys, this place is still small, now is the time to be ironing out these bugs in the works.

Suggestions don't always lead to direct action. I did read your suggestion, and will take it under advisement. We're updating to a more recent version of the V board software soon and that should help filter out some of the BS. As for the posts that have been bad this weeken, I'm away for the weekend with limited access. My guess is most of the moderators are away from their keyboards as well. Tuesday should be back to normal. Thanks for your guys support. Vapor, I did read your suggestion and will incorporate new sections soon.

Happy New Years guys!

MIke

I understand your point Mike, Obviously not everyone can be moderators, or you will have moderators, moderating moderaters :) LOL, But I thought the time zone difference may have helped you. The new security arrangments you are putting in place should sort the problem anyway.
Cheers!! You guys are doing a great job of the Mag- Thank you

Mike, take it with the good intentions it was meant with my friend, ;)
As a way of avoiding misunderstandings, how about a response when a post is made like that? at least we will know you still care about us lowly posters, lol :p

I know it's annoying, the best thing to do is ignore it, and don't click on any of the links.

ahh, that's better. :)

Yeah! It could be like Wikipedia! The first open-source forum! Give everyone rights to create, delete and modify ANY post as they see fit! We could ban members we don't like and they'd have to re-register to get back in. It'd be great! Just look at all of the great info we could "create" here! LOL! :D I say let's do it!

Hi all,

Some of these messages seem a little bit misguided. You are correct that email verification of new members was not properly enabled, which was my mistake, and it has been corrected.

However, if you think that will stop spam entirely, I'm afraid to say that it won't. On my own (rather large) RC forum (www.rctech.net (http://www.rctech.net)) we have always had email verification turned on, as well as image verification, and we still get 20-30 (and sometimes more) spam messages a day. We could add image verification to posting, but that would inconvience the legitimate posters as much as the spammers, and doesn't seem like a good idea to me.

Ultimately, no matter what we do to fight it, somebody out there is working to fight back.

In the meantime, next week I will be working on upgrading our forum software here which should further secure things. Don't think that we're ignoring the problems -- there are just a lot of things to be done at any given time. Our first and foremost responsibility is producing the best magazine we can.

If you have any questions related to the forum or the security of the forum, don't hesitate to PM or email me. Thanks!

Thanks

Never underestimate the power of the Dark Side (wheeze, wheeze)..

Oh, wait. Wrong script.

It still surprises me sometimes what lengths spammers will go through. One forum I visit is for Christian writers, and a couple of months back someone signed in and posted this rather long message that looked, for all intents and purposes, like a legitimate request for advice and prayer. What struck me as odd was the number of places where my mouse pointer changed to show an active hyper-link was embedded in the text. When I looked at the toolbar at the bottom of my screen, it showed the URL for each link, and it was for all manner of websites, including the on-line drug stores, porn sites, etc.

The spammer not only took the time to create the log-in, but to draft a message with the embedded links and made it appear as a message we might reasonably expect to belong in that forum.

Granted, the site has also gotten more than a few spam messages that are as subtle as a train-wreck. Why the spammers would think we'd need a message with dozens of links to sites showing Paris Hilton nude (anyone that wants to see her skinny butt naked has already done so; it's not much more difficult than seeing the sun at noontime in Tucson), or why we'd want hundreds of links to places to buy cialis and viagra (if we're too stupid to find it on our own, we're probably too stupid to know what to do once we've taken it), is beyond me.

I can only imagine what the level of hell Dante Alighieri would have dreamed up for spammers would be like if the poet had lived in modern times...

I have to delete spam almost every time I visit. every morning there is at least one or two messages in my email for spam that showed up but was taken care of by another moderator before I could get to it. these people are relentless! we are working on making improvements to the webpage to reduce it, but it is a continuous battle
