Real Flight G3.5

I have noticed a couple of things running a server that I don't believe are really related to my end at all -

the more complex the flying site I choose - the more trouble - the other end is actually responsible for displaying the graphics ( I believe ) my end just sends the information to co-ordinate the users end - he already has all of the G3 stuff on his box - I suspect that the other ends user can't pull it in fast enough -

Question: is this really P2P if we don't broadcast it or is it running through a central server ( Knife Edge ) anyway that it is run ?

( I use MSN with a cam - and have alot of probs with a friend that uses DSL for example )

ie: if I choose one of the open flat flying fields there does not seem to be any probs...

I chose the obstacle course last night with no end to the "feezing" of the sim.

If I don't get the little "chat" bubble - it's not really "serving" although it appears to be - when I see the "chat" bubble, shortly thereafter I get users - no "chat", no users

It's not bandwidth related, as I have a 6 meg pipe (not DSL) and have nothing else running - like a browser etc - just the o/s, background services, and firewall,

I am going to create a special profile - with only the bare essentials needed for the o/s and the sim running, and try that

this is just one of many sites that shows such a "profile" setup - originally for ramping up gaming performance on the box

I would have to agree with you. Lots of the issues can't be traced to my end either. I'm running a 3 meg pipe and you should only need about 128K to host a sim like this. Once the firewalls and routers are eliminated, there is no reason why one can't connect directly through an IP. Yes, all of the info appears to run locally on your own machine. If the host happens to leave a flying area, the host is automatically transferred to the next person who's been there longest, so it's all gotta be local. The only info (from what I can assume) that goes back and forth is which map you're on, and the positions of the other flyers in the flying field. So now the question remains, why is this so hard to do? I dunno.....If anyone can answer that one, Knife Edge should be actively seeking them out to put on thier payroll.

I usually run the sod farm in the photo fields. My computer gets better frame-rates on photo fields, so I use photo fields even when I'm playing locally. I haven't tried any computer generated 3D fields online at all, but since it should be all run locally, it shouldn't make a difference either. Another conundrum!

One thing I wish they would do is allow you to run a stand-alone server like a lot of other online games allow you to do. That way, you can have it running in the background and not always have to be in the sim to run it. I would suppose that the reason they don't have it would be the transfer of host to others in the session, so I figured this was a moot point when they re-vamped the software.

When Iowaboy and I were on the sim, we ran into the same problems, I had to broadcast the server so that he could join. We tried repleatedly with different configs on my end (router and firewalls) until he could even join from there. It's frustrating!!!

Anyway....I just had to rant along with you Phatchantz! You're not alone!

Ping, Ping, HELLO !!!!

I just "pinged" my server address for the h*ll of it, and no probs - 4 packets sent, 4 packets recieved, no loss - gonna run a tracerout later when I have a sec just to see where and what it hops around to....... curious to see.......

what I would like to do is load up a second box on the router, and run the server there, and login to it - apparently you can install more than one version on diff machines - say that you have a main box, and a laptop, because theoretically - you cannot use them both at once - because of the controller - so you are not breaking any rules ( in this case )............

the server on another box, may be "bending" them abit :D

now the question is, will the server run without the controller ?? - or can I start it up and then unplug the controller ??

there should be an EASY way to test this - but I have looked around the "knife edge" forums and haven't seen much -

what they need is a dummy player that you can tell to login to your server :) for testing purposes... just logon to your server and sit there would be enough at the moment.....

it's like shouting into a canyon and having no echo come back LOL
