Greetings all,

I finally, with the loss of one older rc buggy stepped into the nitro side. I traded for an old Kyosho nexus 30 with all support gear and an older radio. It should be much better suited to the breezy conditions around here then my smaller electrics. It however will need a whole new set of servos and a better gyro. But first I plan to tear it down and lube and check all points of movement. Oddly the whole head appears to be built exactly opposite to how the concept 30 we have of a customers at work. with the links leading the blade instead of trailing along with the blade pinch bolts up from the bottom. Odd because when I look up copys of the nexus manual online it says it's built correctly

I am also sort of appaled by the electronics choices taken by the person the previous owner got it from. 5 futaba s148 standard servos  heli-max micro piezo gyro...

Deffinatly needs a set of servos and a good gyro....

(s148 tail servo?! shudder...)

The 148's are ok for learning and such. My C~30 has them but with a 9254 on the tail. I started with the micro piezo gyro and definitely think its a crappy gyro. Switched to the gy401 and 9254 and the tail holds nice.

I used JR 507 servos on my Hirobo Shuttle ZX and flew the piss out of it. Never had an issue. The 507s are standard non-ball bearing servos - similar to the Futaba 148s. I even used on on the tail with the old mechanical gyro. Like cuzz said - if you're learning, they are just fine.

Save your money for when you get better and decide what your next bird should be.

the 148's should be OK for the nexus, I would worry about the gyro and tail servo first. The Nexus is a decent heli, but it is known to develop slop in the head pretty quick. You should be fine if you keep an eye on everything.

Yes, this bird does have a bit of slop I want to take care of before a flight attempt is made, the head is pretty much the same as the concept 30 just backwards, so I have at least a little experiance with the setup. It will be a while before I try it out so I do have some time, the weather is still kind of nasty on the oregon coast right now :)

Where are you on the Oregon coast? I grew up in Portland and I really miss it. I would give anything for a NORMAL thanksgiving. My friends and I used to play football in the mud every thanksgiving, it just feels un-natural to have thanksgiving when it's 75 degrees and sunny out. I never thought I would miss the cold and rain and snow so much.

Sorry about the delayed reply, I am in the Coos Bay area. It's deffinatly going to be a wet blustery Thanksgiving. :)

Happy (late) thanksgiving everyone I hope it was good for all of ya.:)
Anyway The nexus as i call it "the all plastic not so fantastic" Don't get me wrong Its a good flier and is stable but it needs the metal ball upgrades for it to last any amount of time. The plastic balls wear out quick on the swash and head so you're doing right keep an eye on em. If you feel any slop replace the part or better yet if you can find the metal ball upgrades for it thats even better. The eletronic choices might of been one of those old Tower Hobbies full combos whitch came with that(coughs) helimax gyro and 148's Anyway The old relyable 148's as everyone else said will be fine for you to learn on and if they had the ball bearing conversions done to them they will be fine for a good while the old 148 is in IMO one of the best standard servos made by futaba (i've got one thats out lasted 3 high end digatils). BTW what radio came with it out of curiousasity?? (Nitro)

Actually it came with a futaba skysport 6h(and apparently the remains of a plane using a skysport 4 and os .40) the radio and all the electronics work... except they had apparently mounted the gyro wrong and was not aligned to the tail axis. I guess it could have been for pitch control :p J/K

I admit it...I had that exact setup and yes it was part of the Tower combo. It was a first heli and pretty cheep. I am still using the skyport for my raptor 30 (deffinatly will replace it with something that lets me set the idle up past half throttle this year) but I learned how to fly with it. Parts are not made for it anymore so be careful with it. The gyro sucks plain and simple. Throw it out. The rest of the chopper works pretty well but the plastic parts just wear out too fast. However that cheep setup will get you into the air. If you get another good helicopter upgrade the radio etc. Good Luck!

I actually never planned to fly it with that radio, I have an optic 6 with my rex that I'm going to add a new profile to, and I plan on upgrading to a dx7 once I have the money. I do think I'm going to install the futaba radio with a smaller reciever in my (hides from thrown items) walkera 36

I am however attempting to use the gyro in the 22a, we will see how it works out

Well, I guess I'm going to shoot myself in the foot again, but I may be trading the rex, stripped of all it's electronics, for anomie's nexus, looks like I will have about 1/2 a set of kyosho "zeal" parts for it. A decent trade if you go and price the individule zeal parts for the nexus

As for the rex I will probably miss it but it's too small for this beginner and the wind around here and too big to fly inside. I will keep it's guts though and will probably get another 400ish sized bird. the caliber 400 xp looks tasty

I did get the funky little gyro to finction... but put it in my walkera h2 clone. It's a fun toy to fart around with in the shop. The best parts of it are the servos and the battery, everything else is kinda funky... but it works with out too many glitches. I guess I like it because it's blade cp sized and no d@mn tail motor (3xHS55, 1xHS50, gws micro reciever, helimax micro piezo gyro, castle creations 30amp brushed esc, 370 sized brushed motor, apogee 3cell 800mah lipo that needs sent back due to a bad balance connector)
