View Full Version : Run the engine to the last drop?

Will it hurt my engine if I run it to the last drop?
To prevent mixing old fuel with the fresh fuel, I fly the helicopter in a low hover until I burn all the fuel left and the engine quits (I finish my flying session in a hover auto). Will this cause the engine to run without any lubrication for a second and overheat?
Thanks..

So I still have yet to get a damn heli, but I am going to make an educated guess that it's bad. As with everything else that has liquid fuel involved, especially two strokes like weedwackers and heli engines, never run it out of gas.

Long time NO see or read? Have you been on annual leave? :)
BTW I second your opinion

After your done flying for the day, you need to run the engine completely dry (at idle). Connect the glow starter and keep trying to start the engine until it is completely void of fuel.
Do not leave fuel in the engine, this is a bad thing. Also, close the throttle by hand completely to help prevent air entering the carb during storage.

Running your tank dry is not good. It will lean out due to air and fuel entering the carb through the fuel line.
Motions hit it right on the spot, After your done flying for the day, you need to run the engine completely dry (at idle). Connect the glow starter and keep trying to start the engine until it is completely void of fuel.

Ya just alot of crazy stuff went on in the last three months er so, my helicopter obsession fell wayside for a bit. I'm still lusting over the Evo 50 though, give it a few months I'll have one. The way I see it, this is just more time to get better on the sim
Just go get yourself a couple of fuel line pinch clips. I shut it down to idle, pinch the clip let it run dry. Put the glow plug on it fire it a couple of times, and drain the unused fuel back into the jug. Engine must be dry at the end of the day especially if it is sitting for a couple of weeks. RUST will develop in the bearings if you dont get all the methanol out. Methanol is hydrophilic IE it draws in H20 when it evaporates, and this is what eats bearings. You should do this especially if your in a humid environment. Oil is good for long periods of storage... I would say over a month or so.

Hey Td
Maybe this information could explain what, started your engine failure problems as well as the lean out issue, did you ever find out what the caused your problem in the end?
or did you chalk it up to experience! :)

My issues with the Hyper were due to pilot error and the fact that I was an idiot at the time. I had never asked for help tuning my motor. That, along with a bad bearing is what happened to mine. I always empty the tank and run it dry after each flying session. Have since I was flying plankers.
